Ways that God Can Work Through You

  1. Deliver cookies and a card. Make your favorite homemade cookies or send store-bought treats to brighten someone’s day—a neighbor, a coworker, a first responder, a teacher, the mail carrier, etc.
  2. Leave a $20 bill. Drive to the parking lot of a discount store during peak shopping times and place some cash (in any amount) on a car windshield. Chances are the car’s owner could really use it. You could also bless a gas station or convenience store employee who is working on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
  3. Donate a winter coat or two. Many organizations have warm coats at the top of their “needs” list, so help them check it off before it gets too cold.
  4. Ask to babysit. You could be a real help to a parent who needs to work, shop for Christmas presents, or take a well-deserved break.
  5. Give a generous tip. Whether for your package delivery person, hairstylist, food service member, or lobby greeter, ’tis the season for tipping more than usual.
  6. Throw a “collection” themed party. When inviting others to family or neighborhood parties, include a caveat about bringing a canned food item, new socks, or a new toy for a collection drive.
  7. Be a neighbor who helps neighbors.  Visit Community One’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors portal (www.community1.org) and choose a service project to complete as a family.
  8. Host a Christmas dinner. Add a few more people who could use a friend to your guest list when planning your holiday meal.
  9. Send some soup. If you love someone who happens to be sick this season, a bowl full of hot soup will always be a welcome present.
  10. Give a gas gift card.  Pool together some money to buy a tank of gas for someone who is struggling financially this Christmas season.
  11. Leave a Christmas card for your mail carrier.  Leave a Christmas card (and perhaps a little treat) in your mailbox for the mail carrier.
  12. Volunteer to read a Christmas book aloud to your child’s class, at a daycare, at the Boys and Girls Club, etc.  If possible, choose a book about the real meaning of Christmas.
  13. Ring bells for the Salvation Army.  (Sign up at registertoring.com)
  14. Bless children in the hospital.  Take balloons or small gifts to the children’s ward of your local hospital. You probably won’t be able to deliver them to the children themselves due to privacy policies, but you can ask the nurses to deliver them or ask permission of the parents who happen to be present at the time.
  15. Serve your family.  Choose a day to serve each other inside your own home. Take out the trash for your husband, encourage your children to pick up their sibling’s toys, and show appreciation for one another.
  16. Love like Jesus.  Encourage every member of your family to look each person they come across that day in the eye, smile, and express their appreciation with a simple “thank you” or a compliment.
  17. Shop for food donations.  Go to the grocery store together as a family and pick up a few items for your local food pantry. Many stores have drop-off locations within the store itself during the Thanksgiving/Christmas seasons.
  18. Donate books.  Set the timer for 10 minutes. Have each person in your house go through their books and choose a few to donate to The Potter’s Wheel or another local non-profit.
  19. Make Blessing Bags. Make small bags with personal hygiene items, food gift cards, gum, gloves, etc. for blessing others.  Keep them in your car and hand them out when you see a need, such as someone standing on the corner.
  20. Buy a goat or chicken.  Give each family member a set amount of money (or choose one sum as a family) and purchase a life-changing gift for someone living in poverty.  Visit the website for one of the following organizations to view gift catalogues: Compassion International, Samaritan’s Purse, or World Vision.
  21. Visit a nursing home. Make cards and decorate ornaments to get ready for the special day.  Sing carols and pass out cards and ornaments to all the residents.  Call a local nursing home to see what options are available and what COVID restrictions are still in place.
  22. Drive-thru dinner. Go through a drive-thru lane and pay for the vehicle behind you.  Ask the cashier to tell the the person/people in that vehicle that God loves them.
  23. Pick up trash. On warmer day, head to your favorite park and spend some time picking up the trash from the grounds. Don’t forget to place items you gather in either the recycling bins or the appropriate trash receptacles.
  24. Donate socks.  Purchase warm socks in either children’s or adult sizes and donate them to the Ozanam Family Shelter or Evansville Rescue Mission.
